2007

Who knew I’d live this long? It was certainly not my mother, who also had some suggestions on where I’d be spending eternity. I didn’t actually plan on making it past thirty, because all of my generation though they’d drop the bomb, just like Bob told us in Talking WW III blues. The atmosphere of the nation of my youth was fatalistic, but at the same time, giddy and frantically intense. Sex was generally more casual than today, with fewer consequences in the form of STD’s. In addition to an emphasis on “free love”, the Woodstock generation was not concerned with material processions, or power, or status. So what the hell happened to them? The globe is certainly no safer than it was back then, in fact, we may be closer to doomsday than ever before. What caused the boomers to abandon their ideals, vote Republican, and get us into another nasty unwinnable war? Oh, did you think I had an answer? Nope, I’m completely baffled. My politics are still the same as they were in my idealistic youth, unlike most of the people I still know from that era. I do run into an old hippie now and again, and we rehash and lament the loss of the power base that was going to change the world, but then the cocktail party is over and we both go back home and do nothing. Well, I actually do some things to volunteer in the political arena, but just enough to make me realize I’m not going to make any changes that way. In truth my power to change anything is limited to a very small circle, one about the circumference of my shadow at noon on a summer day. So this gets me around to the reason for my post, New Year’s resolutions.

First I should rehash last year’s resolutions and see where I stand with those. My main aim at that time was weight loss. It’s why I originally started this blog, although in doing so I found a new voice that had been greatly suppressed on my “family blog”. It turns out that my issue was not with weight at all (surprise), but with the reasons why I had turned to food to self medicate. As everyone in the fucking universe who has been within the sound of my voice knows, I’m so over that. I still have some of the baggage of my bad old days to shed, about 50 more pounds. That should put me back into the purple hip hugger bell bottoms I was wearing the night I met my husband. Okay, I won’t be wearing those again guys, but the point is, I will be able to fit into a 10 again by sometime in April. That was the extent of last’s year’s resolutions. I never make many, because the ones I do make I keep. I find they have a way of winding about and making me realize other things that must be changed. With my weight issue last year I tackled the elephant in the living room, my husband’s drinking. The beast is still sitting there, but making no pretense at invisibility any longer. Now all that said, I can get to my new goals for 2007. They are deceptively simple.

1. Demand that my husband get treatment for his alcoholism.
2. Start doing the things I was putting off because I was going to lose weight first.

That’s it boys and girls. Since last years single resolution has turned my little world upside down, I think these two should rock that world on its foundations.

  2. I've actually been considering a new address, but I've been lazy. I also don't want whoever the hell those people in Australia, Sweden, Japan, and etc that seem to be showing up on my counter to lose touch. Maybe one of them will break the silence someday.

Tap, Tap, Tap, say something if you can hear me.

    Oh well, still shy.

  3. Hi, I have no idea how I stumbled on to your blog, but I'm so glad I did. I spent all morning reading.

I appreciate your honesty and sense of humor very much, and you've got one more blogger pulling for you. I agree with Roselle!

  4. Valerie, don't be aggreeing w/ Roselle--she's Canadian.

Spellbound, my politics have gone more toward the middle as I've aged (I passed 30 18 months ago) and I'll have to point out that democrats (including Hillary Clinton and John Kerry) voted to get us into this unwinnable war.

    I need a third party.

Regardles, I'm glad that as a child of your generation that you thought twice about using the "nuclear option" in your personal life. That's awesome.

Um, what's your husband doing for New Year's Eve?!

  5. Matt, I'm still not telling my age, but if I'm as old as I feel you can put me at about 35 (snicker). I need a third party too, but they haven't done so well in the past. I really couldn't vote for Hillary, but I held my nose and voted for Kerry. I like Wes Clark, but don't know if he has the money or the slime factor needed to make it in the current political climate.

My husband, the REPUBLICAN, is "sick" as usual and will be staying in while I go celebrate what may well be the last birthday of my daughter's best friend. Yeah, I know, more soap opera stuff. What can I say except it stands to reason if I've got drama, all my friends and family do too.

Valerie, welcome and thanks for the support.

Speaking of drama, Roselle and Matt, why don't you two just kiss and make up. Life's too short.

  7. I must get myself to the Northern regions someday Roselle. I've heard only good things. I'm actually going to be in Lansing MI over the Memorial Day weekend at the end of May, so maybe.

Uh...why not Hillary? When the current idiot declared war on Iraq because he had proof positive that Saddam posessed WMD's, I prayed (in my own fashion) that he was right, and hoped that we could trust him. When the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES says something so serious (NOT some BS like the meaning of "is"), I think it is our duty to back him, or at least give him the benefit of the doubt. Those Democrats who voted for the war didn't have the benefit of hindsight, and only gave the office of the President its' due respect. I know it's an oversimplification, but I don't have enough time to refute the admin in detail, and others have done a great job already.
NOW that we know the administration fabricated intellignece, or at least emphasized only those bits and pieces that upheld their position, and NOW that we know that they are ALL lying sacks of shit who wouldn't dare to put themselves or their families in harm's way, NOW it is the duty of the Dems to investigate these assholes and throw the MFer's OUT.
I recommend to anyone interested John Deans' latest - "Conservatives Without Conscience". That'll give you a good idea of the kind of folks who ALMOST took over this country for good...yet still have a damn good chance of pulling it out again unless Hillary, or Barack, or John (Edwards, that is), or any number of folks who would do a better job in their friggin' SLEEP for cryin' out loud, than those ASSHOLE Republicans, etc., yada, etc.

  9. Well anon, when you’re hot, you’re hot. You know I have no disagreement with you on politics or anything else, and I share your passion concerning the current political machine. I think Hillary is a bright woman and a good leader, but I believe she had too much baggage to be elected. I have read a bit about the issue and will certainly get the book you mentioned. You might like "Against All Enemies", which I still have and will be glad to share. An exert is on: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/03/22/60minutes/main607774.shtml
It is certainly not going to make you feel any less angry, but it provides a prospective I think you will find interesting. As far as who to back in 2008, I’m still hoping Wes Clark (http://www.clark04.com/about/) pulls it off somehow, but I’m afraid he’s just too good for the job. Since Clark is not currently on anyone’s top ten list, my second choice would be Mark Warner, our former governor. If Barack Obama were on the ticket it would be awesome, but he may need a few more years to mature. I know the people I like never seem to have a snowballs chance in hell of success, but I keep dreaming. Oh speaking of that endangered snowball, I’ll veto for a Republican when Bush sends the twins to Iraq to fight.
